The history of Hyde Park Gate, Kensington Gate and Palace Gate
The land on which Hyde Park Gate, Kensington Gate and Palace Gate were built were in separate ownership. The main part of Hyde Park Gate and Kensington Gate belonged to the Campden Charities.
On his death in 1629 Viscount Campden left £200 for the benefit of the Kensington poor. On her death in 1643 his wife added an additional £200. The trustees bought land in Kensington called Butts Field where most of Hyde Park Gate and Kensington Gate were to be built. The land to the east, on which the rest of Hyde Park gate was built, was owned by Gurs Egg, a gun maker, and was sold for development to Joshua Flesher Hanson, a west London property developer. West of Butts Field was land owned by George Aust where Palace Gate was later built.
